About the Order of Corpus Christi
At the heart of the [Order of] Corpus Christi we
encounter the living Christ in Word and Sacrament in
the community of the Church which nurtures us in the
life of faith and in mission and ministry.
OCC about
Us
(from Order of
Corpus Christi: Foundation Document)
The Order
of Corpus Christi is a religious order open to both lay and clergy,
and to both men and women.
The OCC was founded in 1987 as
an order within the United Church of
Christ. It is open to any who are members of the United Church
of Christ, the member churches of Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC), or other churches in
full communion with the United Church
of Christ.
The Order
of Corpus Christi calls us to live balanced lives
through daily common prayer, silence, and contemplation which
produce concrete action in the life of the Church and
the world, lives that "witness to our oneness in Christ"
and a "sign of our communion with others in Christ
through one Baptism, one Bread, and the call to
discipleship."
The escutcheon
(insignia) is the shield that heralds the heritage and beliefs of
the Order of Corpus Christi. The shield is divided by a cross into
four quadrants. At the top of the shield are the words, "Corpus
Christ" meaning Body of Christ. At the center of
the cross, are a chalice and host, representing the
Holy
Eucharist. The other four symbols and their meanings are:
-
In the upper right quadrant is the
Bible, representing the Church
evangelical.
-
In the upper left quadrant is the
Seal of John Calvin, representing the Church
reformed.
-
In the lower left quadrant are the
keys of St. Peter crossed over the sword of St. Paul
representing the Church
apostolic.
-
In the lower right quadrant is the
Greek Patriarchal Cross in the Circle of Unity,
representing the Church
catholic.
These common practices and
those God may make known to us in the days and years to come are
means through which the members and communities of the Order respond
to God's call heard and seen so clearly in the celebration of the
Eucharist:
Be who you
are ― the Body of Christ
